My husband goes on a "retreat" & Karma

March 15th, 2011:

On Tuesday, my husband left for a 3 day, "Managers Retreat" in Michigan.

We both assumed it would be a 3 day conference in a conference room of a Marriott. I packed business casual for him, nice pants, shoes, button down shirts, etc. He was looking forward to 3 days sitting on his behind, with banquet hall meals, hot tub, golf, pay per view, not worrying about me, the kids, the dogs or his dad.
HOW UNFAIR!!! WHERE'S MY RESORT?

And, how am I going to sleep, alone, knowing he's being pampered, leaving me in charge of everything? Then Karma stepped in on my behalf.

Me to hubby last night, "Did you make it up there OK?" He said, "Yeah, we're all sitting around the campfire now, good thing you packed some sweaters, we're in the middle of nowhere, out in the woods, no stores nearby for things I might of forgotten."
Me..... "CAMPFIRE?"

OK, well, call me when you're in your room for the night."

Later that night he calls and says, "Hi, I'm in my room now".
Me.... "Good honey, is it one bed or two?"
Him, "Actually its 2 sets of bunk beds."

Me.... "BUNK BEDS?"

Later on, when I was trying to fall asleep I started thinking about it.....

WOODS? CAMPFIRES? BUNK BEDS?

IT ALL STARTED MAKING SENSE AND I HAD TO SIT UP IN BED, I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD. This isn't a 3 day conference in a Marriott like I thought and he had hoped for. I realized this is probably one of those "OPRAH" type of Manager Retreats.

I PICTURED HIM, WAY UP HIGH IN A TREE, HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE, WHILE ALL THE OTHER MANAGERS ARE BELOW HIM, HOLDING A BIG BLANKET, SHOUTING UP TO HIM, "JUMP, JUMP, JUMP, TRUST, TRUST, TRUST....."

OK, now I have tears rolling down my face because I'm laughing so hard and my father in law (assuming I'm a good daughter in law who's crying because I miss his son) says to me, "Bev, are you OK up there?" Me, "Yeah, Dad, I think I'll be OK now".

I gathered up all the pillows, and continued to laugh into them. He thought he was going to a resort for 3 days to relax, be pampered, play golf, etc. BUT HE'S IN THE WOODS, WITH BUGS & CAMPFIRES & BUNK BEDS, HA HA!!!

He called me again later and I said to him, "So now are you just gonna stay in your room and watch American Idol?"

He said, "No, there's no TV's or phones in our TRAIN CARS, I'll have to walk through the woods to the main cabin".

I said "TRAIN CARS?"

He said "Yeah, Our rooms are actually old train cars and there aren't any TV's or phones in them."

OK, NOW I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING AGAIN.

No tree climbing, but hes in an old train car, in the woods, cold, sitting by a campfire, with bugs, sleeping in a bunk bed, IN A TRAIN CAR, NOT our king sized bed being pampered by me. Not even phones or T.V's. I think he's going to be very happy to get back home, just as I had hoped.

And to think, earlier in the evening I didn't know how I'd be able to sleep alone tonight.  Ahhhh, sweet, sweet, revenge, I mean Karma, she's my girl!  I slept like a baby.

UPDATE: Well, my father in law is doing great and said he can move back into his own home after my husband gets back. Unfortunately (for me), my husband's retreat wasn't a tree climbing experience. It was those kind of silly team building exercises, but in the classroom. Oh well, my imagination kept me entertained.

My trip to the "real" Casino, or so I thought.

March, 2011:

So I tried to talk my husband into taking me to the Casino this weekend.  He said honey, don't waste your money, you usually lose.  I said, honey, it doesn't bother me at all, its your money.

He recently sold my car to the junk yard for $100 dollars (see my post, Bev's car dies its final death posted 2/15/11). I said we should each take $50 of that money and try our luck at a "real" casino. No way I could buy another car with $100, but I thought, maybe I could win enough to buy one.

I told him the reason I lose with him is because he always takes me to the casino boats around Chicago, and they're not "real" casinos.
I told him the times I won I was in a real, land based casino, in other states, owned by Native Americans, my long, long, lost ancestors (because my mom once told me a great, great, great, great, 2nd cousin married a Sioux Indian and they had no kids).  BUT IN MY MIND (and only in my mind), THERES SIOUX BLOOD IN ME and that will help.

Well, my husband was laughing by this time but decided to indulge me and take me.

I've went to casino's on special occasions for 20 years.  And I've only won twice.  Once, at Ho-Chunk Casino in Wisconsin Dells with my friend Tina (this picture below) I won about $3,000 and once in Black River Falls, Wisconsin I won about $500.  Both LAND BASED CASINOS, owned by NATIVE AMERICANS.  Those are the casino trips I choose to remember.
We're leaving for Indiana, I figure, its in Indiana, (even kinda sounds like Indian), it must be a "real" casino.  So we tell our smart ass teenage daughter the story, she's laughing, she can't believe her dad bought my "my people" story and so she says to me:

"HOLD ON HERE POCAHONTAS, "YOUR" PEOPLE?"
and she went into hysterical laughter again.

I ignored her and we left for the casino.  Brat, what does she know?

We drive an hour to Indiana, pay 2, $3.50 tolls for the Skyway (WTF Indiana!!!) get there, and its on Lake friggin Michigan!!!  A friggin barge/boat!!!

So yes, I lost, again, but I feel its only because I didn't have the Native American luck on my side, the luck of  MY people (only in my mind), the Sioux.  Forget Indiana, next time its the Wisconsin Native American owned casinos or bust!

UPDATE, 8/13/2011:  Well, I finally went to the new Casino on the N.W. side of Chicago with my friend Tina.  And guess what?  Even though its called "Rivers Casino" its a LAND BASED CASINO RIGHT HERE IN CHICAGO!!!  I played 1 and 2 cent slots and won all day long.  I drank to much and stayed to long and ended up giving most of the money back to the casino but it was a lot of fun.

When Tina dropped me off at home without any winnings, Lorens said, "what happened to all your winnings Pocahontas?"  I told him even though its a land based casino it must not be owned by Native Americans.

He just thinks I drank to much and stayed to long.

I hate it when he's right.  But it was an adventure!

What can Bev/Lucy Riccardo & Princess damage in 1 hour?

This is from a one hour period, only one hour, on 12/5/10, a totalBev/Lucy Ricardo hour:

We went to a party last night with some friends and so today,  I WAS EXTREMELY HUNG OVER.  This hangover won't go away, I'm dizzy, but its my sons birthday, 12/5, and today's birthday party must go on.  So it did, but I've been bumping into things, knocking shit over all day.  Like seriously, the grocery store was "clean up in asile 5" after my ass knocked something off of the shelf.

My husband went to bed about 8:30pm, laughing at me, told me to go to bed before I have another accident.  FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT, I'd like to share with you, what I, Bev/LucyRicardo, have done in the last hour, JUST THE LAST HOUR since he fell asleep. This shit has been going on ALL DAY. I should have listened to my husband.  Instead, boy is he gonna be mad at me at 6am.  I should have listened to him and went to bed.

9:30pm
FIRST,  I went downstairs and decided to straighten the rug under the coffee table. So I lifted up one side of the coffee table and of course, everything, including the glass ash tray went sliding off the other side of the table onto the hardwood floor, shattered, glass everywhere. Why didn't I realize that would happen, what the hell is wrong with me today? So I cleaned it up, more dizzy now....

9:40pm
SECOND, I decided to have a piece of a Bakers Square Cheesecake/french apple thingy that one of the guest had brought to the birthday party earlier today. I'm carrying a piece on a plate and a glass of milk to the frontroom, slipped on the kitchen floor, fell forward, the milk FLEW out of my hand (propelling forward, towards the front door and coat rack) so hard that it made the jingle bells on my front door jingle, from the milk now dripping down them and the door, and my hubby's coat.

I started laughing, he was right, I need to go to bed.  I cleaned up the milk off the walls, the door and his coat.

I put the cake on the side table in the frontroom and I was trying to stay positive, laughing it off, thinking, AT LEAST I SAVED THE LAST PIECE OF CAKE!! Then I went downstairs to fold some clothes, then I remembered the cheesecake, so I came back to get it and another glass of milk.....

9:55pm
THIRD, Upon entering the front room, I immediately see my husbands work boot on the couch, where I had been sitting a few minutes ago. What the hell?
Why would that be there?  No one is downstairs.  Who put it there? Then I noticed my son's wallet is in the shoe as well, and it's wet!

So I start laughing, AH HAAA, I think, my teens are messing with me, so I ask them, they're like "mom, you're crazy today, I don't know, maybe theres a ghost in the house."  So now I'm really, really, confused.

I take out the wallet and notice the Dr. Scholls insole is wet too, so I take it out and my husbands shoe is filled with graham cracker crumbs and cream cheese. AH HAAA! Now I think I know what happened.  I look to the side table, then to my dog, Princess, looking all guilty on the other side of the room.

She must have been eating the cake off of the side table, it was getting closer and closer to the edge of the table, like one of those quarter arcade games.

First, the moving plate must have pushed the wallet into the shoe,
then the entire piece of cheesecake fell into his shoe.
Then, Princess must have brought the shoe onto the couch
to really dig in during the 10 min. or so that I was folding clothes.
That's why it was all wet.  It was dog slobber in his work boot.
I should have went to bed....

10:00pm-10:15pm
So, I'm at the sink, washing his shoe insole, my son's wallet and the inside of the shoe. I put them in the dish drainer to dry and start laughing hysterically at what he's going to think when he sees this scene tomorrow morning.
Then I turned around and saw his coat hanging, still drying after getting milk all over it, I had forgotten about that freak milk accident1/2 hour earlier and now I'm about to pee myself laughing so hard.

I thought, its been 45 minutes, his coat is going to smell like spoiled milk, his shoe is going to smell like rotten cheesecake tomorrow, he's gonna kill me.

I'm going to bed now. Yes, this is all true.  I share it with you so you can laugh with me because it won't be as funny tomorrow when I tell him, "Honey, it was 2 freak accidents back to back."  He's gonna say "LUCY!!!"

SO, THAT WAS ONE HOUR, JUST ONE HOUR, MY ENTIRE FRIGGIN DAY WAS LIKE THAT.

UPDATE: The next morning. I'm sleeping and my husband calls upstairs, "Honey, why are my shoe and Michael's wallet in the dish drainer?"  So it took me a second and then I remembered it all and started laughing.  So at least I woke up laughing.

That's life, might as well laugh about it.

Bev's 15 minutes of fame/my Oprah adventure.

September 8, 2009

I could walk to the train which takes me to downtown Chicago.  I was feeling the familiar butterflies in my stomach, the ones I got when I would think of something exciting I could do, an adventure!!!   Yes, I decided, that' it, I was going to go on an adventure today!!!

Yes, I was going alone.
And no, I didn't care.

I was going to pack a lunch, walk around downtown, have a mini picnic with myself in Grant Park, walk along Michigan Ave. or the lakefront, etc. Just be a part of Chicago, be out, feel free and alive!

Then I remembered Oprah was doing a show, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, on Michigan Avenue.  I thought,   thats an even better idea!  I've watched Oprah for 23 years.  I got a lot of great advice from her when I was raising my kids.  Marriage advice.  Stranger danger advice.  Safety advice.  Stories of people who have made it through the most horrific events and are here to share their stories as inspiration for all of us.  Oprah is awesome in my book.

But I thought I'd never get to see an Oprah show in person.   I searched my house and found enough money for train fare there and back and so I knew, this is it, I'm actually going!

My friend Janet called me to see what I was doing, she was thinking of calling in sick to work, she really was feeling under the weather.  I said, "I'm going to the Oprah show on Michigan Avenue, yes, I'm going alone, no, I don't care.  This will be the highlight of my summer.  The memories I make today will last a lifetime.  This is a once in a lifetime day, and its a spur of the moment secret adventure, my favorite kind, I'm going!"

Well, to my surprise she said, "I'm coming with you!" and she called in sick to work and met me on the train.

When we got downtown, we ran with others to try and get the best position on Michigan Ave.  We ended up about 2 blocks back from the main stage but right in the front row of our block that was sectioned off.

Downtown businesses were giving away stuff, seeing what a marketing jackpot this was becoming.  Vitiamin Water passed out bottles of cold water ALL DAY AND NIGHT.  Oprah's producers came into the crowd and passed out freebe's also.  I was already having a great time.

My friend asked me to try and keep a low profile
and stay off camera so her work wouldn't find out she was here.

ME?  Keep a low profile?

I had brought a folding chair, PB&J sandwiches, treats, granola bars, fruit and water and started passing them out to others in our section that didn't have money, didn't bring food or didn't realize it was going to be this hot out here.  I'm a wife, mom and a former Girl Scout so I was prepared.    Thats why many people hated this event and many others, like me, LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.  Because some of us were prepared to sit in the middle of Michigan Avenue for hours and some of us were not.

I told everyone, "Isn't this great, look at us, we're in the middle of Michigan Avenue in one of the greatest cities on earth."  I made a big deal about every handout we got that day, no matter how small.
Some negative lady said when Vitamin Water handed out thousands of bottles of water, "so what, its just free water, big deal".  I said, "Its flavored Vitamin Water I usually pay $1 a bottle for.  And today, I've already had 4!  Cheers to you, cheers to Oprah!!!"   I was glad to have this chance and I appreciated it.

Then they told us they had a surprise for Oprah and the Black Eyed Peas.  The biggest flash dance in the history of the world to date, would be performed today, BY ALL OF US!
We practiced the dance moves for HOURS.  The picture above is of us practicing.  The girl on stage behind me was one of the dancers showing us the moves.

When people started complaining (because many of us were over weight housewives that weren't use to dancing in the middle of Michigan Avenue in 85 degrees for hours), I offered them something to eat or drink.  I told jokes.  We told stories of our favorite Oprah moments.
This was becoming a great adventure, like the ones I use to make for myself when I was a kid.  I would explore Chicago on my own and make my own happiness through my own adventures (see my story: http://bev-benyamin.blogspot.com/2011/04/bev-11-year-old-secret-chicago-explorer.html).

Then I saw the cameras, newsmen, reporters.
The butterflies started inside of me.
I thought, I'm just a housewife from Chicago,
and I'll never have this chance again.
I had to get on TV.
I had to.
I needed to be on TV.
I became unstoppable.
BEV THE TRIPLE THREAT (ha ha):
TELEVISION:
Me to Marcus LeShok of WGN TV: "Hey, Mr. LeShok, over here, I love you, you're the best, WGN, whoot whoot!!!"  I said "OMG, Mr. LeShok, I'm the number one Oprah fan in the world!!!! Please come over here, talk to me".  The people in our section I had been talking with all day were like "Yeah, Mr. LeShok, come over here, shes Oprah's biggest fan!" So he walks right up to me and starts interviewing me on camera.

I'M THE ONE IN THE WGN CHICAGO NEWS CLIP BELOW (1:24) THAT SAYS (In a deep voice that I can't believe belongs to me, yuck.  It was sore from talking and cheering for about 5 hours.)  WHEN ASKED WHAT OPRAH MEANS TO ME:  "EVERYTHING! ONLY OPRAH CAN CLOSE DOWN MICHIGAN AVENUE.  UNLESS A CAB HIT ME I WOULD NOT BE IN THE MIDDLE OF MICHIGAN AVENUE IF IT WASN'T FOR OPRAH WINFREY!  Then later in the video (2:14) I also said "She built the schools in Africa.  Oprah does everything."
My friend is the one to my right, in the Harley hat,
trying to hide from the camera.

NEWSPAPER:
Then there were photographers from the Tribune and Sun Times taking pictures.  I saw them snapping pictures of our section but I was behind some people.  I felt I HAD to get in the pictures, so, naturally (for me),  I jumped into the air and screamed YES, fists pumping in the air.  So in the picture below, I appear to be some giant Amazon woman, great.  My friend Janet is sitting down waving in the Harley hat.

RADIO:
Then, another reporter from WGN radio saw all this attention I was getting and was probably thinking what a NUT I WAS and he started interviewing me.  Then he asked if I would sign an agreement to be on WGN radio tomorrow morning to talk about today.  I said ABSOLUTELY!!!

This was all before the Oprah Show even started.

Then the show started, she introduced the Black Eyed Peas.  This was it, I was so excited!  When the dance started, I kinda felt bad for Oprah and the Black Eyed Peas.  I felt embarrassed for them because they weren't in on what was happening.  They must have thought we were a boring crowd, just standing there, not moving, to play this trick on them.

Oprah put her hand over her head, swaying it back and forth, trying to get us to move, or to make sure we were still alive.

The Black Eyed Peas were clapping their hands above their heads, trying to get us to move, smile, anything.

Then, just as planned, the 1 lady in the front row starts dancing, then some more rows up front joined in, then we ALL started dancing, like 15,000 of us, many overweight housewives just like me!  We even did wave moves, it was incredible.  The Black Eyed Peas said it was the best surprise of their career.  Oprah said, "THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING EVER!"

The show was also incredible.  HERE I WAS, BROKE ASS BEV, dancing in a record breaking flash dance, meeting great people, getting freebie's, at this incredible event and concert, with Oprah, the Black Eyed Peas, James Taylor, Rascal Flats Chris Angel and Jennifer Hudson, ALL FOR THE PRICE OF TRAIN FARE!

It's one of my best adventures so far.

When it ended at sunset, Nate, Oprah's designer friend, was leaving, I ran right up to him saying, "OMG Nate, I love you!".  He looked at me and said "Ok?" (like, why is this lady so excited? I'm not a rock star.) but he shook my hand! So, I even got to shake the hand of a famous person!
We took a water Taxi along the beautiful Chicago River.  There was a cool breeze, perfect after this hot, sweaty, tiring, awesome day.  We got off the water taxi at  Union Station and rode the train home.
My friend said, "God Bev, you were on a roll today, I hope we're not on the news."  As we're on the train discussing it, someone we both knew from her work called her cell phone and said, "Hey, you were on the news just now, you and Bev, clear as day."

That's when Bev's adventure lost some of its luster for her.
Utt Oh,  Lucyyyy, what have you done!!!

I tried to say I was sorry, I told her that damn magnetic personality of mine just couldn't be stopped.   She didn't think that was funny.

At 6am the next morning, WGN radio called me for the debate over yesterdays event.  I was someone that said she had the best time ever.  There was also a lady that said the day was a disaster.  I made my case stronger.  I put a positive spin on everything.  After, he said I was being awarded a $50.00 gift card to a downtown pizza place.  I gave it to my daughter, her and her friends took the train downtown for their own adventure and used it.  So I got to spread happiness again, thanks to Oprah.

I told my friend, "Maybe your boss missed the news last night and my radio interview this morning."

Then I went to the store and got the newspaper,
the Chicago Sun-Times,
the date was even funny,
09/09/09.
I opened it and was like, UTT OHH, the gig is up,
my friend is definitely in trouble now.

Because there was that picture of me and her
as part of a 2 page spread titled:
 "Oprah's Magnificent Smile"
with Oprah on one page and on the page next to her,
there was ME, jumping in the air (to make sure I was in the pic),
so I look a foot taller than everyone else,
and my friend is sitting down, in the Harley hat, waving.
When she went into work, she was called into her bosses office.
He had the Chicago Sun-Times on his desk,
opened to this picture, our picture.

SHE WAS SUSPENDED FOR 2 WEEKS WITHOUT PAY.

I felt really bad.  Its been almost 2 years now,
hopefully she's forgiven me.

But it was one of my favorite adventures..... so far.
My 15 minutes of fame.  TV, Radio & Newspaper.
All for the price of train fare & water taxi fare.
Once again I had a great time even though I'm poor.
And my theory once again proved true,
that money & material possessions don't always bring happiness.
but ADVENTURE CAN!

Bev's CAMPING TRIP FROM HELL, 2002

BEV'S TRUE STORY OF THE CAMPING TRIP FROM HELL.
This story is still NOT funny to me:

SUMMER, 2002
We wanted to take a trip with our kids during the summer.  We found out my hubbys company picnic was going to be at the theme park near St. Louis, Missouri, a little over an hour from where we lived in Springfield, Illinois.  So we decided to go camping an hour past St. Louis Friday night, near Merimac Caverns and Merimac State Park.  We figured we would camp Friday night, we would go to the theme park Saturday and then drive home.

THE CAMPER:
(It kind of looked like this picture I found on line)
A "friend" of my hubbys from Springfield said we could use his camper so we didn't have to pitch a tent.  That sounded so fancy!!! You mean I don't have to set up camp for an hour, sleep on the ground or contend with snakes?  You mean we'll have a toilet, a stove, a TV/VCR, A/C?  SOLD!!!  He didn't notice anything out of order, except it was about 15 years old.  We loaded up the 3 kids (our 2 and our niece Jacklyn), our dog Angel, and headed out for the camp ground, 2 hours away.

We got to the highway and were on the On Ramp and we hit a bump.  Immediately, the camper filled up the the most toxic, horrible, old, shit smell you have ever smelled in your life.  We were all gaging.  We pulled over and called the owner and he said, "I must have forgotten to empty the toilet tank at the end of last summer.
When you guys get to the campground, just dump it, sorry", like it was no big deal!!!  We were only about 15 min. from our house, WE SHOULD HAVE TURNED BACK HOME.  But the kids said they could handle it for 2 hours, better option than cancelling the highlight of their summer vacation.  So we drive about 1/2 hour, kids are settling down, hubby is trying not to hit any bumps, its HOT, windows open (because the A/C was already on the fritz).

JACKLYN'S MAGIC 8 BALL:
Jacklyn, our niece, (who was 13) decides to pull out her magic 8 ball and scare my kids/her cousins.  So Jacklyn started asking the Magic 8 ball all of these questions:

"Is this trip doomed?".................. OUTLOOK NOT SO GOOD
"Will we die?"................................ IT IS UNCERTAIN.
"Will Jennifer get hurt?".............. YES.
"Will Michael get hurt?"...............YES.
"Will Auntie Bev get hurt?"..........YES.
"Will Uncle LoLo get hurt?".........IT IS CERTAIN.
 "Will Angel get hurt?".................YES.
 "Will I get hurt?".........................NO.

Now shes freaking me out and I was like, "OK Jacklyn, put that DAMN thing away and stop scarring your cousins, ha ha ha".  But I had a terrible feeling, and I WAS THINKING, WE SHOULD TURN BACK.

THE ONE AND ONLY BLACK CLOUD FOUND US AND OUR BROKEN WIPERS:
But as I looked out the window, I thought, the sun is shining, its a beautiful day, just very hot, Bev, you're just  being superstitious.  Right as I was thinking that, OUT OF NOWHERE, a single set of big black clouds moved in right over us and it started POURING RAIN.  My hubby went to turn on the windshield wipers, nothing happened, we realize they were broken.
We barely made it to the side of the road, it was a  blinding downpour and we were driving blind without wipers.  We had to sit there until the rain stopped, looking at each other, thinking poor kids, this trip is over.  We went to a gas station so he could see if he could fix it before we broke the news to the kids. Inside the gas station they had this RainX stuff that makes the rain just bead off of your windshield.  We bought it and it worked.  I looked up, the sky was completely blue, not a cloud in the sky.  How eerie.  So once again,  I IGNORED MY INNER WARNING, and we continued on our trip.

LORENS GETS HURT:
About a 1/2 hour later, the kids all fell asleep, then so did I.  All of a sudden I heard a very loud THUMP.  I woke up and looked out the window and said to my husband "What was that?"  He didn't answer me.  So I looked over, he was holding his head, which was BLEEDING, the camper is swerving as he yelled out in pain.  I was confused, 1/2 asleep, looking around, like, "WHAT, WHAT JUST HAPPENED?  PULL OVER, TELL ME WHATS GOING ON!!!"

He pulls over, says something hit him in the head.  I see the bed above us, and there's a metal ladder that is suppose to be secured across the sleeping area above the dashboard that's now on the floor behind our seats.  It had fallen down and hit him in the head when he hit a pothole.
(picture I found on line.  The inside kind of looked like this.)

The camper is filling up with the year old shit smell again too.  I got him ice from the cooler, bandaged him up and Jacklyn says, "JUST LIKE THE 8 BALL SAID, IT IS CERTAIN, UNCLE LOLO WILL GET HURT."

I YELLED at her this time to be quiet and stop scarring the kids.  But Lorens and I looked at each other and I had a pit in my stomach, AGAIN, and yet I IGNORED MY INNER WARNING and thought, its just a silly Magic 8 ball, no way.  We secured the ladder and continued on our trip, now over an hour behind schedule.

**********************************************************************************
We get to the KOA campground and it was HOT outside, 95 with 100% humidity and it was almost dark.  Kids wanted to go swimming before the pool closed.  Kids had their swimsuits on under their clothes.  So they just dropped their clothes in a pile on the camper floor and we went to the pool.  My husband's head was swollen, bloody, he had a headache and just wanted to stay in the camper and try to lay down.  That time at the pool was the only good part of the trip.  Cool, relaxing, fun, tired out the kids.
**********************************************************************************

JENNIFER GETS HURT/HAS NO CLOTHES:
Pool is closing, its pitch black out, we're wet and the temp. dropped, we're cold and not sure where our camper is.  We're walking through the campground looking for it and the kids start running ahead of me.  Then Jen starts crying and Jacklyn screams for me.  I run ahead and find Jennifer on the ground, crying hysterically.  She ran right into some campers metal hitch and cut her nose and face, scrapped her hands and legs in the gravel on the way down.
Now its dark, we're cold, Jen's hurt.
I was thinking, great, just get me back to my damn camper.

So we find the camper, go inside with Jen crying, bloody.   I get her all bandaged up and tell her to go get changed.  She opens her suitcase (which she INSISTED she pack herself cause she's a big girl) and realizes she brought the wrong one. This was her dress up suitcase that had all her costumes in it, not clothes.  OUR DAUGHTER IS GOING TO BE POCAHONTAS, PRINCESS JASMINE OR A WITCH FOR THE REST OF OUR TRIP!

I tell her to just put on the clothes she wore here.  The clothes she had worn there had been thrown on the floor in our rush to get to the pool earlier.  A tube of toothpaste had been dropped on the floor and had been stepped on, many, many times during all this commotion.  All of Jen's clothes, HER ONLY CLOTHES, now had toothpaste on all of them.
So now we had to drive the smelly camper into town to a WalMart and buy her a change of clothes.

BYE BYE VCR,  HELLO OUTHOUSE:
We get back and hubby tries to dump the tank and realizes there's no hose and we can't dump it.  Not only do we have to live with this smell for another day, we can't use the toilet and need to get up, dressed, find a flashlight and walk to the outhouse.  We decide to start a movie in the campers VCR to help the kids fall asleep.  We put in a new movie (we had borrowed from a friend) and hit play.  About 5 min. into the movie, the VCR sparked, ate our friends movie and died.  Now I think I owe our friend a new movie and the camper owner a new TV/VCR combo.  Great.

The campers air conditioner kept shutting off and it was now cooler outside than in our SMELLY camper and I ENVIED THE PEOPLE IN TENTS.

In the morning we got ready to leave for St. Louis.  Lorens' head is swollen, cut, and his head was still pounding.  Jennifer had a gash across her nose and scratches on her head and leg and hands.

We get to the theme park and put our dog Angel into their kennel.  They said they would put her in a big outside run with access to the inside/outside, with a bucket of water.  We went into the park, thinking she would be safe.

It was PACKED, way too crowded, way to hot.  But we had food coupons his company gave to all employees and their families so we got to eat and drink throughout the day without having to go outside to our camper and cook more hot dogs.  The food coupons ended up being for hot dogs.

MICHAEL ALMOST DROWNS:
(I found this picture on line, PERFECT.  Looks just about how crowded
the theme park wave pool was in Missouri where our son almost drowned.

At one point the kids were getting overheated so we decided to take them into the water park part of the theme park (so did about 1M other people).  We go to the wave pool which was way overcrowded.  All you could see was inner tubes, as far as the eye could without an inch of open water anywhere.  My son was 8 years old.  Then the waves started.  The crowd roared.  I see a very large woman's inner tube knock my son over.  I see my son go under the water.  It was so crowded, where he had been disappeared and was now covered in black inner tubes, with no way for him to get above water.

I REALIZED, MY SON WAS UNDERWATER, DROWNING!

I became Superwoman.  I ran towards him, LIFTING inner tubes with both hands, on either side of me, FLIPPING people out of their tubes as I went along, like they were toothpicks, looking for my son.  When I knocked person #5 and #6 off of their inner tubes, my son popped to the surface, throwing up water, coughing.  We carried him out of the pool to the lifeguard, my stomach was in my throat.   I said, "HEY, YOU, MY SON JUST ALMOST DROWNED BECAUSE YOU'RE SO OVERCROWED, HE WENT UNDER AND COULDN'T FIND A 1 INCH SPOT TO COME BACK UP".  So she blew the whistle and they closed that pool for a few minutes while they called first aid for Mike.  He checked out ok but I was very shaken.

That was the last straw, I thought, how much worse can this trip get?  Now my son almost died, I wanna get my dog and go home.  So we leave after I stop up front and tell them what happened and how it was their fault.  No, I don't want free tickets, I'm never coming here again.

ANGEL ALMOST DIES:
So we go to the kennel to get our dog.  I stop by the outside part to peek at her.  Shes laying down, her tounge is sticking out to the gound.  It was about 95 outside, the sun was completely covering every inch of the kennel, there was no way for her to go inside, and the bucket they had given her had a hole in the bottom and she was without water ALL DAY.  I was hysterical.  "FIRST YOU TRY AND KILL MY SON, NOW MY DOG!!!".
(Found this pic on line.  Their kennel kind of looked like this
except the doors to go inside were closed.)

We got their hose and wet her down, gave her a cup of water.  I was crying to my hubby, "Just take me home already, this is a camping trip from hell, I give up!"  LOL, this was all before the fire.

THE FIRE:
So we leave 6 flags, get onto the highway, had driven about 15 minutes from the theme park but we were still in Missouri.  All of a sudden, smoke starts coming out of the hood and then out of the dashboard.  We were in the middle lane.  There was a car with 2 old people on our right that would not slow down or speed up so we could exit.  Lorens was honking the horn, I was waving my arms but they wouldn't look over at me and we almost missed that exit.  We didn't have a cell phone and we thought we have to get off of the highway to a phone to call the fire department.

Then flames started coming out of the dashboard on my side then, burning my legs.  I started screaming, unbuckled and jumped in the back as my husband was trying to exit the highway.  I have 3 kids, a dog, we're doing 70mph and we're on FIRE!!!!

I tell the kids, "Get ready, the second the camper stops, we have to jump out, leave everything behind."  There was a gas station just off of the ramp.  I don't even know the name of the little town we were in between 6 flags and greater St. Louis where this happened.  We pulled off the highway, right into a Shell Gas Station at the bottom of the ramp, right across the street.  We pulled the burning camper on the side of the building, we later saw we had pulled in right on top of the gas refueling hole in the ground.

The second we stopped, we both jumped out the drivers door (passenger side was completely engulfed in flames by now) as the kids were opening the back door of the camper. I didn't want them to have to come up front but we realized the back door was stuck, the kids and the dog are trapped and are going to have to come out past the fire.  They kids came running out, no problem, we told them to get far away, but our dog went and hid in the back of the camper.  My hubby finally coaxed her out but she singed her fur and burned her face on the way out.

The gas station store was closed for the night.  We told the gas station attendant  (through the anti theft glass), "Quick, call 911, we need the Fire Department!!!"  He told us, that there was a garden hose over there we could use.  "A garden hose?"  Did he think my "toy" camper was on fire?  What a moron!!!  We ran back to the camper, the inside dashboard was completely engulfed in flames by this time.  Lorens found a spicket on the side of the building and had to ATTACH the small hose to it, then he turned on the hose and nothing happened.  No water!  I run back to the glass and say again, "CALL 911, THERE IS NO WATER!"  Lorens screamed at me to go on the other side of the gas station building with the kids and the dog.  We both thought the camper was about to blow.
(Found this picture on line. )

The idiot gas station attendant  finally called 911 and the Fire Department came, so did a couple filming it, talking about it on camera, trying to do a little news story about my trauma as we were still going through it.  I wanted to smack them.  They said they listen to the scanner and rush to scenes and try to sell it to the news stations.  I don't know if it got on their local news that night or the next day.  I refused to speak on camera, I was hysterical and they reminded me of ambulance chasing attorneys.  I felt like I was in shock.  The firemen came over, said the fire was out, told us we would need to call someone to pick us up and they left.

I was sure it was an evil curse and I was truly petrified, shaking. Everything inside the camper was burned up, including the DAMN Magic 8 ball, and smelled of burnt plastic and old shit.  I can still smell that smell writing this story.

MY SISTER/MY HERO AND THE  STRANGE TOW TRUCK DRIVER:
We're now stranded, in another state, with someone else's burned up camper, that we borrowed.  I called my sister.  She drove all the way to Missouri, I was about 100 miles from Springfield, IL where we both lived.  She called for a tow truck, picked us up and paid for the tow truck to tow the burned up camper back to Springfield ($300).  She brought us munchies, drinks, blankets, etc.  She was my hero that day.

The tow truck that picked up our camper didn't have any lights to hook up to the back of our camper (totally illegal).  He told my sister to follow him in her van for the 100 miles so no one would slam into the back of our camper he'd be towing.  He then proceeded to drive 50mph in the LEFT PASSING lane, towing the camper, while people doing 70mph (the limit in Missouri) sped around us, honking, making me shiver. I realized if he slammed on his brakes, we would crash into the back of the camper and die.  I had to keep my eyes wide open, starring at the back of the charred camper I never wanted to see again.  I was now convinced the 8 ball or the camper itself was evil and was trying to kill us, and its not over yet.

So I didn't blink for 100 miles.

My sister was following him, and looked into her rear view mirror to casually ask me how the rest of our trip went. I started screaming, "DAWN, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD, DON'T LOOK AWAY!  WE'RE GOING TO SLAM INTO THE BACK OF HIM IF HE STOPS"!!!  She was like "Bev, CALM DOWN, you're safe now".  I was like "No Dawn, you don't understand, this trip is cursed, its the Magic 8 ball, its trying to kill all of us except Jacklyn, or at least hurt all of us except her, it wants us to think we're safe but we're not.  We're going to crash!".  I couldn't even blink.  She looked at me like I was crazy and said,  "Okkkkkk, ummm Bev, what 8 ball, what curse, what are you talking about?  Bev, an 8 ball can't cause a fire. Did something else happen besides the fire?"  I would have started laughing hysterically, but by this time I was traumatized.  I was freaking out and sure it was some sort of evil.

HOW IT ENDED:
The tow truck dropped off the burned up camper to our driveway at midnight and left.  The owner came, said sorry and towed it to the junk yard, said we could have left it in Missouri.  We could have missed that ride home following it, not blinking for 100 miles, and saved $300.  I wish he never told me that.

I got the worst of the smoke and fire.  I couldn't stop coughing up black soot for hours and had some small burns on my legs also.  I was afraid to drive to the hospital but my husband convinced me I needed to go. I was treated for smoke inhalation and released a few hours later.

My niece was NEVER allowed to bring her Ouji Board or her new Magic 8 Ball near me (just in case).

We didn't camp much after that, when we did, we pitched a tent, under the stars, on the cool ground, nature all around us, cooked on a campfire, the night air was our A/C and the outhouse was far enough away that I never had to smell old, toxic shit ever again.   And THOSE were the best camping trips.  We didn't need any of that stuff to have fun.  We had everything we needed, we only thought we needed more.

I don't see how this is one of my funny stories for my "might as well laugh about it" blog,  I'm not there yet.  My sister still can't bring up this night without laughing hysterically.  She always tells me at parties, "come on Bev, tell your camping trip story."  She says, "This all happened to them in 1 weekend camping trip!"  That's all she manages to get out before she starts laughing hysterically, remembering the look on my face that night she picked us up at that gas station in Missouri.  Now I'll tell them to read my blog so I don't have to retell this story.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few horrible things that happened, this is the first time I'm writing it down.  I know that the Magic 8 ball was right, everyone was injured, including the dog, except for our niece Jacklyn, JUST LIKE THE MAGIC 8 BALL SAID!!!

Bev the SNAKE KILLER, 1998

Early Summer, 1998:
So, some of my friends requested I tell the story of why I am known as Bev the snake killer by my friends in Springfield, where we lived for 10 years.

When we 1st moved to the Springfield area, we found a house, 3 miles from the main road, that backed up to the woods, hiking trails out my back door, down the hill to the Sangamon River.  It was in between Springfield and Petersburg, IL (where my hubby worked).  The road to our house from the main road had corn fields on either side.  If there was a lot of snow, the blowing snow made the road just disappear and you're snowed in for days unless you have 4 wheel drive on your car.

There was about  a block stretch when you got way back in there, of about 10 houses, that all backed up to the woods and the river.  We lived in a duplex on that block.  It was like a Stephen King novel setting, way way back, very scary at night and during thunderstorms, giant trees falling all around you.  Out our back door was the woods, you could walk down the hill, down the trails along the river, hike, fish, bon fires on the little beach down there, 4 wheelin, etc.  Looked exactly like this pic below that I found on Google, without the tree swing (that would have been cool):

BUT there are also venomous snakes down there.

SO one day, hubby was at work, our kids were like 5 and 6, they wanted to go in the yard with Max our dog (who was a giant Rottweiler and VERY protective of them). So they go through the mud room, into the back yard and I immediately hear Max barking, and the kids screaming.  As I was running towards the yard, they run past me screaming, "SNAKES"!!!

So I go out there, my neighbors on either side of us are looking out their windows by this time.  There are 2 GIANT red & yellow looking snakes (red & yellow = kill a fellow, as the saying goes), sunning themselves in my yard!  They must have made their way up from the river and they were sunning themselves.   I got a little closer to them and the big one started acting agressive and moving TOWARDS me.  My neighbors Missy & Tim were screaming out their window, "they're the poisonous ones,  get back!!!"

But all I could think of was primal instinct.  Like a mother lioness, heat rising off of me, like, this is where my dog and children roam.  Seeing something, anything, being aggressive and deadly towards my children, made something  inside of me snap and I went TOWARDS them with a fury I've never felt.  I was thinking, you people sit back and watch.  I'm from Chicago.  I'm big, they're little.  They should have stayed away from my children.  I'll literally rip them apart. They should have stayed in the woods and the river where they belong.  Now they're gonna die.

I was looking for something to kill them with.  I expected them to head for the woods and river but they went for my home and retreated down a hole under my mud room!  OH, HELLLLL NO.  So I THOUGHT I had a great idea and got the gas can.  I POURED GAS DOWN THE HOLE UNDER MY HOUSE THEY HAD MADE and was looking for a light to light it.  Thank God I didn't find a light, my husband later told me that would have been BAD.  But as soon as the gas reached them, THEY CAME SHOOTING OUT, RIGHT AT ME!  I PICKED UP A STEEL SHOVEL (I had for scooping up the giant Rottweiler poop) AND HIT THE BIG ONE ON THE HEAD WITH THE SIDE OF THE SHOVEL SO HARD, I CHOPPED HIS HEAD RIGHT OFF!    But because we were up above the river and sandy shoreline, the ground was a dirt, clay and sand mixture and the shovel was now stuck in the ground from me using Superwoman strength to kill the first snake.  The second snake was coming TOWARDS me and her dead mate.  She didn't look happy.  I realized this is no garden snake showing this kind of aggression.   I finally got the shovel out of the ground and slammed it down on her midsection.  BABY SNAKES STARTED COMING OUT OF HER, LIKE 15-20 OF THEM!!!   I started smashing all I could with the shovel, cursing at them as I went along.   My neighbors were screaming, laughing and cheering out their windows, SNAKE KILLER, WHOO HOOO!!!

While I was picking up the lifeless bodies of the 2 big snakes and throwing them into the woods some of the babies got away.  I'm sure they grew up to seek vengeance for their parents, I wouldn't know, we moved out after that.

I've never been that way before or after in my life. In a killer rage. I was like a raging bull, steam coming off of me, my eyes wide and alert, like this is it, life or death. I thought, if I don't hit them hard enough, they'll just come after me and I was a long way from a hospital with anti-venom.

All the neighbors bought me drinks that night. My nickname went from Chicago to Snake Killer.  And to this day, when I call my country friends Denise or Missy & Tim, they answer the phone "What's up Snake Killer!"  When I'm feeling sad or defeated, Denise still tells me, "COME ON NOW, YOU'RE TOUGH AS NAILS, REMEMBER, YOU'RE NOT JUST A HOUSEWIFE, YOU'RE  MY BEST FRIEND.   YOU'RE THE SNAKE KILLER FROM CHICAGO FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!"

It was unusual to see so many kinds of poisonous snakes, but that year we had record flooding, I think it was 1997 or 1998.  Two rattlesnakes were also killed at different times that summer in those same woods by another neighbor, Mr.Morrison.  Later that same summer, I was walking through the woods with our dog Max and I heard a rattle, so did Max, he wanted to go towards it, he knew by this time snakes were mama's enemy.  It was coming from under some leaves nearby, right off the side of the trail we were on.  Man, I've never run UP that hill that fast in my life.  We always walked with BIG STICKS after that. It was more fun getting down there on the 4 wheelers, less stressful getting to the beach.

SO, If you're from the big city, like Chicago, and you're transported to the country, like unincorporated Sangamon County, just know that your killer instincts go with you.

We believe the snakes I killed that day were Copperheads.  They looked exactly like this:
Image: American copperhead

POISONOUS SNAKES OF THE AMERICAS

American copperhead
Agkistrodon contortrix
Description: Chestnut color dominates overall, with darker crossbands of rich browns that become narrower on top and widen at the bottom. The top of the head is a coppery color.
Characteristics: Very common over much of its range, with a natural camouflage ability to blend in the environment. Copperheads are rather quiet and inoffensive in disposition but will defend themselves vigorously. Bites occur when the snakes are stepped on or when a victim is lying next to one.  A copperhead lying on a bed of dead leaves becomes invisible.  Its venom is hemotoxic.
Habitat: Found in wooded and rocky areas and mountainous regions.
Length: Average 60 centimeters, maximum 120 centimeters.
Distribution: Eastern Gulf States, Texas, Arkansas, Maryland, North Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma, Kansas, Ohio, New York, Alabama, Tennessee, and Massachusetts.

I knew why she was being so aggressive after I saw she was about to give birth.  She was doing the same thing as me, protecting her young.  But I did what I had to do that day.  And then we moved back to the city.  I feel way safer walking around Chicago than the wilderness.   I thought I wanted the country life but I realized I'm Chicago at heart.
